Recently, housing and ageing experts at the University of Stirling completed research into the impact of introducing low-tech gadgets to retirement homes to find out whether they can positively impact the health and well-being of those involved.
Lead researcher, Dr Vikki McCall found that hot water dispensers, jar openers and smart speakers, that could be used as part of minor changes to residents’ daily plans ended up having a ‘transformative effect on their well-being and safety.’
In the article announcing the results, Dr McCall said: “The evidence highlights a strong and recurrent theme where minor improvements to the day-to-day living of older people living in supported accommodation sites, can have the biggest impact and that routine changes can have a transformative effect. This can be from making a cup of tea independently, to joining a ‘Fitbit’ walking group or receiving medication reminders on your tablet.”
Because of this, we have put together a list of simple-to-use products from the Manage At Home website inspired by the article that could positively impact the daily lives of older people.
An effective solution for those who struggle to remember to take their pills or to lock the door at night, the MemRabel2 can be set up so that the owner can receive daily time reminders with accompanying voice, picture or video prompts.
Simple but effective, the double-sided walls can be filled with hot or cold water to aid in prolonging the life of a meal or dessert, keeping the bowl at the correct temperature to aid those who are slower eaters.
Ideal for those with a loose grip, these jar openers are made from a non-slip material that helps you get a strong grip on your jar lid or bottle top.
Simply turn it on, tilt and pour! Specifically designed for those with limited reach, dexterity and strength, the Uccello Kettle is a stylish hot water dispenser that features a unique circular design that ensures that hot water is poured safely and steadily, every time.
Lightweight and trendy, the rollator boasts height-adjustable handles, strong easy-to-use breaks and a handy removable bag for those on the go. Features an innovative self-locking mechanism that enables quick and easy folding and unfolding
Perfect for hobbies and reading small print, repair work and much more, the Magnifying Table Light features an adjustable arm which always gets the light and magnification at the correct angle.
