Guest Blog: Lifemax – Making Ageing Easier

George Burns hit the nail on the head when he said, ‘You know you’re getting old when you stoop to tie your shoelaces and wonder what else you could do while you’re down there’.

Old age is often associated with mobility issues and a greater reliance on family or even professional care. For many of us, however, ageing starts with those little changes that make everyday life a bit less convenient, whether that is it becoming harder to read the small print, remembering to take medication or struggling to fall asleep. Although small, these changes have a big impact on self-esteem, with studies showing that self-esteem peaks in one’s 50s and drops sharply into old age. This is even more true when an individual loses their independence, something particularly pertinent to the economic and social pressure for Seniors to stay in their own homes for longer.

We believe modern innovation and technology can be used to redress the balance of age-related conditions and to make ageing easier. From simple pill reminders to mobile-based telecare systems, our range of products are designed to bring enjoyment and increase independence and security for the benefit of both the user and, where applicable, their carer.

Lifemax: Who Are We?

Lifemax was established by John Sivyer in 2003 with a sales and logistics office in the Royal County of Berkshire. Benefiting from the support of offices and manufacturing in Hong Kong and China with over 40 years of experience, the company initially focused on a range of professional fall alarms often, which we continue to sell under the Nutrix brand. The offer quickly expanded into other helpful products designed to address those small age-related changes, from specially designed reading lights and innovative talking watches to calming, relaxation products. Today the range extends to over 200 carefully chosen products, which we believe to be the best in their field.

With John’s son, Andrew, taking over the role of Managing Director in 2013, the Company has remained a focused, family-oriented operation in the UK with ongoing support from the Far East. We feel this structure offers the best of both worlds, with a flexible and empathetic team in the UK able to support our products and respond to customer feedback, and an experienced souring and engineering team in the Far East finding high quality, good value innovations.

Lifemax works closely with several charities, including the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), Parkinson’s UK and Alzheimer’s Society and are always keen to understand the challenges their members face. These relationships allow us to better evaluate our product offer, such as the award-winning Atomic Talking Watch designed in association with the RNIB.

What are we known for?

Our eclectic range of products caters for a wide range of needs and often becomes invaluable to the user. Please see an example of three of our products below to give you the flavour of our range:

Product:Talking Atomic Watch
What does it do?Designed in association with the RNIB, our Gents and Ladies Talking Atomic Watches offer a classic design with easy-to-see dials and fonts. Automatically set using the Atomic signal, our watches require no adjustment for daylight savings and offer pinpoint accuracy. They will announce the time and date in a clear British voice with the press of a button and offer both an alarm and an optional hourly chime.
Why is it useful?Imagine a world where you do not know the time, how do you make sure you do not miss that appointment? How do you know when to get up? For someone with limited or no sight, our watches are an invaluable daily aid. They offer valuable independence and help with every element of the day.

Product:Friends & Family Mobile SOS Button
What does it do?Our emergency button works anywhere there is a mobile signal, giving you peace of mind without affecting your freedom. When pressed, the button automatically calls three numbers, one after another until answered and then allows you to talk through the pendant. This product is customised for each customer and provided with a trial sim package which can be extended, making it a stress-free purchase that works out of the box.
Why is it useful? It can be hard to accept a little help, and no one wants to lose their independence. This product offers a safety net for anyone who has become a little unsteady on their feet or diagnosed with a condition that requires a quick response. One of the key benefits of our system is that it contacts friends and family rather than a call centre, with a familiar voice often being a great comfort should an emergency arise. We find our system is often more acceptable to someone who is just starting to need a little more help.

Product:High Vision Reading Lights
What does it do?These bestselling lamps are specially designed using near daylight-bulbs to give the perfect light for reading, hobbies or close work. The floodlight effect bulb delivers a constant light to cover the maximum working area and prevent eyestrain and headaches. The flexible arm means you can adjust the angle to ensure the light always shines from the right height and direction.
Why is it useful?Nothing is more frustrating than poor light when you’re trying to read or work on something detailed, and this is even more relevant for those with poor sight – a common symptom of old age. Introducing our High Vision Floor Light to your home will transform your leisure time, with reading becoming clearer and easier, helping you feel less tired.
